Creative Futures 3- Ian Sturrock Game Theory Sessions / Meme-a-thon Board Game

In several optional sessions we had at University, we learned a little about game theory and ideas about game design in general. We had a task to create a game revolved around the idea of a race with a time limit of an hour, in which the 'racers' (or players) could alter each others progress somehow.

I collaborated with two friends and we came up with the idea of an internet race game involving memes. The objective would be to escape the internet (reach the end tile) while using memes to your advantage or detriment. I had the task of creating the cards, so I researched a lot of memes and devised the 'effects; they would have on gameplay. Because of the nature of memes, I thought of vastly different effects, ranging from helpful to massively mean-spirited.

We ended up completing the board game, and we tested it too. It was a lot of fun, but it was also quite sporadic in gameplay; sometimes, gameplay would be very smooth and then suddenly every player would be bombarded my negative effects from the cards. Although, the mechanic of players having their own cards to use when they want to sort of balanced out the chaos somewhat.

Here's the finished board game:
